haley, yes, when an early Hebrew husband was free to force his wife—for no other reason than he suspected her of adultery—to drink a bowl of water into which dust, gathered from before a sacrificial altar had been mixed, a concoction that might have easily killed her, I consider that woman to have been nothing more than "a piece of property". What else?
Why did God, through Moses, dictate that dust must be gathered from in front of a sacrificial altar? Because that dust, more than any outside the area, might well be contaminated with ANTHRAX, that's why. Anthrax, if taken internally, can kill. I looked that up. I've done my homework.

Does it say ANYWHERE in the Bible that a woman is a piece of property, or is that idea anywhere? I don't think it is.

Haley, I merely quoted, word for word from the Holy Bible and you accuse me of attacking the "word of God". While still in the folds of a fundamental church, I was led to believe that the book of Proverbs was as relevant today as when first written. I've a question of you: why did it take God all those centuries between Solomon's words of wisdom written for his son and for the writer of Ephesians to come up with the idea that perhaps a wife should mean more to her husband than a piece of property that he could treat as he wished and dispose of her if dissatified? According to God's Word, that was the lot of early Jewish women.

I came across this blog as I was doing research for a paper I am writing about Godly women in the book of Proverbs. I think that before you start attacking the Word of God this way you should understand that the book of Proverbs was not written to women. It was written to the Son of Solomon giving him wisdom for his life. Solomon was mearly trying to protect and warn his son about finding a good wife and staying away from the wrong kind of woman. The reason that this book doesnt give any advice to warn women against "the brutality of men" was because it was not written to women, although there are things for us to learn in it. The Bible does, however, talk about husbands needing to love their wife in other books. Ephesians 5:25-33. hope your cold clears up....

My, you have a lot of irons in the fire, as my mom used to say.

I'd hate to see you stop posting just as I've found your blog, but I understand how busy people must prioritize.

(Curiosity brought me here, after I came across an old comment from you on my blog, one I didn't recall having seen before.)

Jacques: I won't know how the hearing aids are going to work out, and, mostly, I don't need them for much of the time. I have good hearing in my right ear when talking on a phone, but I sometimes realize that when listening to the television, if I had other people living in the house, they would be asking me to tone down the volume a bit.

Selma, glad to have you stop by. And didn't you also have shingles while I had them? Had them? They can hang around for a long time after they are no longer visible, but you probably already know that.
Jacques, my son, my son, I've always been pleased that you chose the line of work you did. I don't have to tell you what it's like not to have an adequate income coming in. You were old enough while on the farm to remember hard times.
One of the most important people in my life is a retired officer from the military who is computer knowledgeable and who is willing to help the elderly cope with something they don't understand about their computer. I haven't had to rely on him very often but when I do, he's always here to help me out.

So, how did that hearing test go the other day? I am looking forward to hearing…ah, reading…what you learned about your hearing loss and how you plan to deal with it. Myself, I don't hear much of anything these days. I have something like a 60% loss in both ears, which isolates me pretty well. I can usually manage to carry on a conversation with one other person, but not at all with a group (unless it is a group of Kaufmans, who never say anything quietly--which includes myself :).

I'm fortunate to be a computer programmer who communicates primary with computers and--with co-workers and management--through computers. Consequently, my hearing loss has not appreciably affected my ability to make a living.

I'm also fortunate that Shelley accepts me as I am and doesn't show impatience with my handicap, bless her (on the other hand, she is something of a recluse herself, which works out well for us). And thank goodness for Closed Captions!

Hi Mary - Unfortunately it took me awhile to get to the doctor as I thought that nasty blistering rash was just a reaction to some antibiotics I had taken. So by the time I saw him I was in a bad way. He put me on antiviral meds and I'm much better. But it has been almost a month now and my body still aches in places it shouldn't and I don't have my energy back yet. I tire very easily. I thought I was too young for shingles - and if I'd had any idea that's what it was I would have sought treatment faster. I had three separate sites and my doctor said he had never seen that happen on anyone (leave it to me!). The main rash has left a nasty scar that looks like a left-over burn and I'm hoping it fades. For now I just put up with it and hope for the day I feel like myself again. Hugs! Linda
